Graffiti is a part of urbanity the world over. For some it’s an expression of identity and visual empowerment, for others it’s a work of art and for some a profane petty crime. Its rise to cultural prominence has been aided by now renowned artists such as Banksy and Jean-Michel Basquiat, however their work remains controversial and challenging to the norms of the art world. Originally an act of protest and rebellion against the status quo, graffiti incorporated ‘tagging’ and propaganda.  It was not until the 21st century that general graffiti could be classed as street art and mainstream popular culture.
